Rensenpark Emmen

2019 | Smart lighting scenario’s

The Rensenpark is situated in the 12 acres area of the former ‘Noorder Dierenpark’ zoo, right in the middle of the city of Emmen. The park houses cultural facilities, catering facilities and small companies and has spaces left for new building activities. The city asked a lighting design that supports the creative atmosphere in the park and that is able to organically grow along with building activities in the next 15 years. The light should cater to a large variety of activities in the park, ranging from evening strolls to visiting a large festival. The light should also support traffic safety, especially on the paths that are shared by cyclists and pedestrians.

Studio Philip Ross and StudioDL turned these wishes into a Preliminary Design. An important element of our vision behind the design is to make walking the park at night as wholesome as walking it during the day. To achieve this, we focus light on the natural elements, which are the trees, rock formations and other characteristic objects. For this we took inspiration from Attention Restoration Theory from psychology. Another key element is rediscovery: by changing the lighting scheme regularly, highlighting different objects each period and lighting areas in different ways, people are enabled to rediscover and re-experience the park continuously. Next to this, light levels are kept low to save energy and minimise light pollution, leveraging on the adaptation of the eye. We developed this vision into a design by working on three levels: Luminaire planning (placement and selection of the right luminaires), Infrastructure specification (define the required technologies) and Scenario design (the dynamic lighting programs). Ten lighting scenario’s were defined in collaboration with the municipality. The animations on this page show three of them from the Preliminary Design phase. Studio Philip Ross focused on both the scenario design and intelligent infrastructure specification.
